We start the episode in a flashback where we see a blonde woman get out of a car and change the license plates on it. She has lots of them in the trunk from many different states. She grabs a few things from a maid’s cart at a small motel and sneaks into a room. She applies dye to her hair and while she is in the shower rinsing it out, we see that the woman is Kate. She gets a letter from the hotel office and uses the fake name Joan Hart when she picks it up. Kate sits in her car and cries as she reads the letter.
On the island Dr. Leslie Arzt (played by Daniel Roebuck), tells Michael that the monsoon season is coming and it may be too late to launch the raft as the trade winds will take them south instead of north where they will want to be going. This of course causes a small panic throughout the survivors. Kate tells Michael she will be going on the raft with him to which Michael flat denies her request. Telling her that all the spots on the raft are spoken for.
Jack is at the hatch still with Locke and Sayid where they are discussing who didn’t tell who about what. Jack wants to know why Locke didn’t tell him about the hatch and Locke fires back with why Jack didn’t tell everyone about the case full of guns. Jack asks Locke how they open it, and Sayid nearly shits a brick. He thought Jack would be on the other side with him NOT wanting to open it. Sayid wants to bury it. Jack says what is the worst that could happen. Sayid points out that the hatch has no door on the outside which might mean it wasn’t supposed to be opened from the outside. Kate finds the three as she is going for Jack and she tells them that Michael is sick. As Jack checks on Michael, he tells Jack that even though he is sick they still must launch the raft in a day.
Kate goes to see her old friend Tom who is a doctor in a hospital. Tom arranges for Kate to have a meeting with Diane, her mother, in an MRI room. Kate sees pictures of Tom’s family, and she asks Tom where his wife is. He tells her they have three hours to kill, and she asks him to take her to dig up a time capsule they apparently buried under a tree in a cow pasture.
Locke and Jack discuss what could have made Michael sick. Jack finds a water bottle that has a white residue at the bottom of it. Jack takes a bottle of water and swaps it with the bottle Michael has and Michael thinks that Sawyer did it to him. Jack, Locke, and Hurley discuss who could have made Michael sick and Jack says Michael thinks it was Sawyer. Hurley asks if it was because of Kate. Hurley tells Jack about Kate wanting Sawyer’s spot on the raft and wondering if Kate could have done it. Locke asks why Kate would do it. Hurley who still can’t keep his mouth shut tells him because of the whole fugitive thing and you can see Jack react like “Shit, something else we didn’t tell Locke.”. Hurley says he doesn’t know who knows what and has a hard time keeping it all straight. Locke asks why Jack didn’t tell everyone about Kate and Jack throws it back in Locke’s face and tells him he used discretion which is exactly what Locke told Jack was the reason he didn’t tell him about the hatch.
Elsewhere on the island Charlie is writing a bunch of songs inspired by their time on the island. He tells Claire once they get to L.A. she can live with him until she gets settled. Claire gives Charlie a haircut as he begins to play “Monster Eats the Pilot” which will be track two on the new Drive Shaft album. In the caves Jack confronts Kate about poisoning Michael. Keep in mind she did just drug Jack's juice in the last episode. She asks if Jack thinks she is capable of that, and he tells her that he isn’t sure what she is capable of. Kate storms off.
Kate and Tom find the time capsule and among the items inside it is the toy plane, and so we see why it is so important to Kate. They play a tape the two of them recorded when they made the time capsule. Tom mentions that when the two of them are older they will be married. Kate tells him, on the tape, she just wants to get old enough so she can run away. Tom asks her why and she states ominously “You know why.”. The two of them share a kiss before heading to the hospital.
Walt talks to Locke about someone getting his dad sick and he tells Locke that it wasn’t him. John tells Walt that they are friends, and he touches Walt’s arm, and Walt tells John not to open it. Locke asks him what he means. Walt says whatever it is, for John not to open it. Meanwhile, Michael confronts Sawyer about who made him sick. Michael tells Sawyer he is off the raft. Sawyer then confronts Kate and puts her on blast about being a fugitive and shows them the fake passport she made out of Joanna’s who was the woman who drowned in White Rabbit. I think, anyway.
At the hospital Kate’s mom Diane is sick with cancer, which I’m assuming is what made Kate cry in the car when she read the letter. Diane (who is played by Beth Broderick was on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, now I know big whoop right, but wait, who else starred in the show as Sabrina? Yep, Melissa Joan Hart. The fake name Kate used earlier in the episode.) wakes up and isn’t happy to see Kate. In fact, she freaks and pulls her hand away. Kate tells her she is sorry for what she has put her through. Diane screams for help. Both an orderly and a security guard confront Kate, and she knocks out the security guard. Tom finds her and she asks him for his car keys. He leaves with her instead and as they leave the parking garage, she tells Tom to get out, but he declines. As she drives on, a police officer shoots at the car causing Kate to crash into another car. Kate discovers Tom is shot and she once again takes off on foot leaving a dead Tom and the toy plane behind.
Kate admits she was the fugitive that was in handcuffs with the Marshall. She tells them that when she gets back to civilization she will be going to jail as she is still wanted. Michael gives Kate back the fake passport and tells Sawyer he is back on the raft. Everyone seems a little leery of Kate now and they all leave her alone. Jack makes small talk with Sun about Jin leaving on the raft and that she doesn’t want him to go. He asks her if that’s why she tried to make Jin sick. She tells Jack she didn’t want Jin to die on the raft. She tells Jack she didn’t want to hurt Jin, only to make him sick enough to stay off the raft. Jack tells her he won’t tell the others about it but urges her to come to terms with Jin leaving.
Sawyer tells Kate he is back on the raft, and she asks him if he is there to apologize. He tells her he isn’t, and he explains that he did what he had to do to protect his spot on the raft after she cornered him. Kate wants to know why it’s so important to be on the raft and he tells her because there isn’t anything important enough on the island to stay for. I feel like if Kate had asked Sawyer to stay with her, he would have maybe been tempted to stay. Walt checks on Michael and then tells his father he was the one who burned the raft. Walt says he didn’t want to leave. Michael surprisingly tells Walt they can stay if he wants. Walt tells him that he wants to go now. Sun goes to check on Kate and tells her that Jack knows. She then tells Kate that she didn’t tell Jack that it was Kate’s idea though. Sun comments that when she was a little girl she thought that when she found the man she was to fall in love with that it would last forever. Kate says “Yeah, me too.”. Presumably talking about Tom.
Hey, what do you know this episode comes with some thoughts from yours truly. First, let’s talk about Walt who I am assuming when he says, “Don’t open that thing.”, he is talking about the hatch even thought we have never been shown that Walt has ever seen the hatch. Yeah, I know he’s “special”, but this is the first time we have seen some proof of his abilities on the island. The other thing I wanted to dissect is the whole Kate got Sun to make Jin sick thing. Now Sun perhaps thinks that Kate talked her into doing it to get Jin off the raft because it was how Sun said, that she didn't want Jin to leave and maybe die. But we know differently, don’t we? Kate, with ulterior motives, got Sun to do it so she, Kate, could have Jin’s spot. So, it was never Sawyer’s spot Kate wanted but rather Jin’s. Was it not only so she could keep on running or did she also want to be with Sawyer? See I think it might have been a little bit of both. Kate wants to be with Sawyer more than Jack, but we know in reality she will be with which ever one will advance her agenda more at any given time. Now the only thing I want to know is who the hell sent Kate that letter?
