Outlaws

A flashback takes us back to the night when a very young Sawyer’s father kills his mother and then kills himself.  Sawyer watches this while lying under his parents’ bed.  All we see of his father is the pair of cowboy boots he is wearing.  Much later, an adult Sawyer is told by a former associate named Hibbs, who owes Sawyer for what went down in “the Tampa job”, that the real Sawyer who ruined his life is now living in Australia under the name Frank Duckett.  After going to Australia, Sawyer buys a gun and tracks down Duckett who is working in a small restaurant selling shrimp.  Sawyer talks to the man but doesn’t kill him.

On the island Sawyer wakes up from the nightmare that is also his flashback to find a boar in his tent.  It destroys his small campsite taking the tarp down and running away with it into the jungle.  Sawyer gives chase into the jungle and hears the whispers Sayid heard.  He clearly hears one whisperer say, “It’ll come back around.”.  The next morning Sawyer asks Sayid about the whispers he said he heard in the jungle.  Later, Sawyer along with Kate who comes along to help Sawyer track the boar, decide to camp for the night and play the drinking game “I Never”.  At the end of the game Sawyer says, “I never killed a man.”, and they are both surprised to see the other take a drink.  The next morning the two wake up to Sawyer's belongings once again destroyed by the boar while Kate’s are untouched.

After Sawyer decides not to kill Duckett he goes to a local bar and meets Christian Shephard.  Christian tells Sawyer that some men were meant to suffer and that is why the Red Sox will never win the damn Series.  He tells Sawyer he wishes he had the courage to pick up the phone and call his son who hates him.  If he did, he would tell his son he was proud of him but he is too weak.  He says if he did it would fix everything.  Christian says he forgot his wallet (that we saw in White Rabbit he had left in his hotel room) but Sawyer picks up the tab.  Christian appreciates Sawyer picking up the tab and tells him that whatever is bothering him, Sawyer should “fix it”.  Later that night Sawyer shoots Duckett who tells him he is not the original Sawyer.  He tells Sawyer that he owed Hibbs money and that was the real reason Hibbs sent Sawyer after Duckett.  Before dying, Duckett’s last words are “It’ll come back around.”.  The same thing Sawyer heard the whispers say.

Back on the island Locke joins Kate and Sawyer at their campsite and while he sits down and enjoys a cup of coffee, he tells them a weird story about his sister dying and his mother believing a dog that wandered into their house was really his sister returning.  The dog slept in his sisters’ room for five years until his mother passed away and then it up and left just as fast as it came in.  Kate asked him if he believed it was his sister too and he says no but what was important was that his mother believed it was.  He said because his mother believed it was it helped her deal with his sisters’ death and to help her realize the death wasn’t her fault.

Later, Sawyer finally catches up with the huge boar but is unable to kill it.  Kate watches him and you can see her heart melt for the southern conman just a little but more.  After he gets back to camp, Sawyer gives the gun back to Jack who locks all the guns back into the Marshall’s case again.  They talk and, in the conversation, Jack says, “That’s why the Sox will never win the Series.”.  Sawyer realizes Christian was Jack’s father but doesn’t tell him about meeting him.
