Solitary

While walking along the beach, Sayid finds a large electrical cable that comes out of the jungle and into the ocean.  Sayid follows the end that goes into the jungle.  He follows it until he comes across a trap that he avoids but in doing so is caught in a second trap.  He hangs upside down in the trap for over a day until someone comes and cuts him down.  Later he awakes to a woman asking him where someone named Alex is.  In the caves, Hurley is talking about how people are all on edge and need something to help them to relax a little.  Locke and another survivor named Ethan return from a hunting trip with some more of the belongings from the passengers.  Hurley volunteers to go through it.  Something in the items puts a huge smile on his face.

In Sayid’s flashback we see that he is proficient at torturing terrorists.  So much so in fact that his superiors give him a promotion to the intelligence division.  As he is talking to his commanding officer, he sees a woman being brought in.  Sayid recognizes her and is later told to torture her.  The woman is Nadia who was a childhood sweetheart of Sayid’s.  Sayid goes in to talk to her and they discuss how she became a traitor.  She tells Sayid she won’t talk and shows him wounds from her previous run ins with others who tortured her.  Later Sayid comes back to speak to her trying to convince her to give up her accomplices seeing as how this might be enough to get them to let her go or at least be more lenient towards her.  She refuses and tells Sayid he isn’t a torturer.

Jack and Michael make plans to build a shower in the same area where the drinking water supply is located.  They are interrupted by Charlie who wants them to see what Hurley has been working on.  Meanwhile Sayid tells the French woman that he doesn’t know who Alex is and then asks her about the recording that has been broadcasting for sixteen years.  She cannot believe it has been that long.  Sayid tells her about the plane crash, but she doesn’t believe him.  She says she knows what he is.  The next day the French woman whose name is Rousseau, says her distress signal is now being controlled by “them”.  She asks him if he was on a beach with a bunch of other survivors why is he out in the jungle all alone.  He tells her it is because of something he did that he banished himself from the group.

Hurley’s big reveal is he has created a golf course to help the survivors cope better and relax.  Jack and Michael eventually attempt to play a round of golf.  Sawyer jokes when he hears Jack is playing golf cracks a joke “A doctor playing golf, what’s next a cop eating a doughnut?” to Kate when she asks if he’s going to go see the golf course.  He doesn’t go.  Later some of the survivors are beginning to make wagers on the golfing.  Sawyer shows up and begins to make bets, but it makes some feel a little angsty.  Eventually they all begin to take his wagers and accept him a little more.

Rousseau asks Sayid what happened to the woman in the photo, and he tells her she died.  She shows him a music box that Robert, a man she loved gave her.  The box, now broken, Sayid says he might be able to fix but she would have to untie his hands.  Instead of doing this she injects him with a rusty syringe once again knocking him out.  After he wakes up she tells him he re-positioned him so he could work on the music box.  She tells him her name is Danielle and that she was a member of a science team whose ship crashed on the island.  She tells him something happened and that was when she made the recording.  She says a sickness got them that was brought to them by “The Others”.  She said she never met them but she heard them whispering in the jungle.  Sayid doesn’t believe her.

Back in the flashback, Sayid’s commanding officer tells him he is to execute Nadia as they have been questioning her for a month and she has offered no information.  Sayid goes to her cell with a bag to put over her head.  He tells her she is not going to be executed but rather he has created an escape plan for her.  She asks him to go with her, but he declines.  Nadia writes a note on the picture which is the same one we see Sayid with on the island.   The two are caught by one of Sayid’s friends and he calls for other guards.  Sayid is forced to choose between Nadia and his friend.  He chooses Nadia killing his friend.  He then shoots himself in the leg to cover up his actions.  Nadia escapes as he looks at the picture of her.

Back on the island Sayid is able to fix the music box but then they her a roaring sound outside the tent.  Sayid tells her not to go out that it might be the monster.  She tells him there is no such thing as monsters and leaves.  Sayid is then able to free himself and grabs a gun and some maps before he leaves as well.  In the jungle Sayid and Danielle run into each other again a point their guns at each other.  After trying to fire his gun Sayid discovers the firing pin has been removed.  She says Robert didn’t notice either right before she shot and killed him.  She tells him she had to kill him because he was sick like the rest of her group.

Danielle admits to killing the entire science team to not allow the illness to leave the island.  She tells Sayid she can’t let him leave as she doesn’t want to be alone anymore.  Sayid tells her what Nadia wrote on the picture.  He translates it as “you will find me in the next life if not this one”.  He tells her he wants to go be with his friends as they all can all find rescue together.  She allows him to leave but doesn’t go with him.  She tells him to watch his people closely.  Before he leaves he asks her who Alex was.  She tells him that Alex is her child.  As Sayid makes his way back to the beach he hears the monster and then hears the whispers Danielle talked about.
