Exodus Part 2

The second part of the season finale picks up with Claire’s baby being cranky on the beach.  Claire complains to Charlie that she can’t handle being a mom.  Sayid gathers everyone to go to the caves for safety.  Charlie asks Sayid for a gun for safety for Claire and the baby in case The Others come.  Sayid tells Charlie to take her and the baby to the caves with everyone else.  Meanwhile in the jungle Hurley asks how the ship got into the jungle.  Arzt says a tsunami might have blown it there.  Danielle, having got them to the ship, leaves but Jack wants to know how they will get back to the hatch without her.  Locke says he can lead them back.

Jack, Kate, and Locke go into the Black Rock and find human remains.  Locke guesses that the Black Rock was a slave ship.  Kate finds a marked trunk containing the dynamite.  Arzt talks to Hurley and says he knows he isn’t cool enough for his little click.  Arzr complains about Kate getting favoritism, Jin not catching fish for him, and Hurley not having lost weight since crashing on the island.  Hurley tells him it’s all in his head.  Arzt shits a brick when he sees Jack and Locke carrying out the trunk containing the dynamite.  He carefully wraps the explosives in Kate’s wet shirt as he explains how dangerous it is.  He then blows up.  Hurley reacts with a classic Hurley “Dude.”.

Airport security allows Sayid to go catch his flight.  Jin, in the airport bathroom, meets an American who speaks Korean. He tells Jin that he also works for Mr. Paik.  He tells Jin he knows Jin is planning to run away from his boss once he gets to California.  He continues by telling Jin he will not get away.  He says Jin will never be free.

On the raft Michael and Sawyer see how big the island really is.  Sawyer sings some Bob Marley and Michael approves.  Back on the beach Sayid helps Shannon with her things which also include some of Boone’s things.  Sayid comforts Shannon and helps her carry some of her stuff.  In the jungle Hurley and Kate talk about Artz blowing up.  Hurley tells Kate it is his fault because he is bad luck.  Kate tells him it was an accident.  Jack and Locke wrap more dynamite.  They can’t even agree on how to do that, and it ends with Locke scaring Jack.  Jack asks if Locke likes to play games and Locke says yes.

Danielle makes it back to the beach and says she needs to find Sayid.  Charlie goes off after him leaving Claire and the baby with Danielle.  When Danielle asks to hold the baby, Claire remembers it was she that made the scratch marks on Danielle’s arms.

Charlie wakes up the morning of the flight with some floozy he spent the night with on a bender.  He tells her he doesn’t have any more drugs so she kicks his ass, but Charlie doesn’t let her have the drugs.  She takes a bottle of booze instead and leaves the hotel room.

Charlie finds Sayid and they hear Sun calling for help.  They find Claire with a bleeding head wound and the baby gone.  Charlie blames Sayid and punches him.  Sayid tells Charlie not to hit him again and the two of them will go look for Danielle and the baby.  In the jungle, Jack and Locke agree not to take more dynamite than they need.  The plan is to divide the dynamite between two backpacks that way if one person doesn’t make it; meaning blows up like Arzt, maybe the other one will.  Jack says he will take a backpack, and Locke says he will take one.  Kate says she is taking one, so they decide to pull sticks for it.  Jack is the odd man out.  Hurley tells Jack he has a little Arzt on him.  A funny scene my description doesn’t do it justice.

Back on the raft Sawyer reads the messages in the bottle and wonders who Hugo is and how does he have a hundred and sixty million dollars.  He also can’t keep straight who is still alive Steve or Scott.  Scott’s the dead one by the way.  Claire tells Charlie and Sayid she is going with them to look for Danielle.  Sayid suggests that Danielle is looking to trade her daughter for Claire’s baby.  Claire tells Sayid not to tell her what to do.  Claire tells Charlie to bring Aaron back.  The kid finally has a name.  Charlie tells her they will get him back.

At the airport Walt isn’t talking to Michael who goes to make a call.  He calls his mother and asks her to take Walt.  While he’s on the phone we see Locke get wheeled by.  Michael tells his mother that Walt was never supposed to be his.  Walt may or may not have overheard him and tells Michael he needs batteries for his hand held video game.

On the raft Michael lets Walt steer the raft for a little while.  Walt asks why Michael didn’t stay with his mom.  He says that they tried to work things out, but his mom took off and that’s why Walt didn’t see him for a long time.  Walt figures it out that maybe it wasn’t all his father’s fault and that his mom was wrong.  The rudder breaks off and Sawyer jumps into the ocean to retrieve it.  As the rudder begins to sink Michael and Jin throw a rope for Sawyer to tie around the rudder.  They pull both the rudder and Sawyer back to the raft.  Michael finds the gun that Jack gave to Sawyer and gives it back.

Jack and his group head back to the hatch with the dynamite.  They make sure to stagger their formation so only one person gets blown up if things go wrong.  The rest of the survivors gather at the caves.  Shannon looks at the makeshift bed Boone died on.  Sun says Boone died bravely.  Sun asks Shannon if this is all a punishment for not living good lives.  Shannon asks who is punishing them.  Sun guesses fate.  Claire says there is no such thing as fate.  Sayid and Charlie make their way towards the black smoke.  They rest near the Nigerian drug plane.  Sayid tells Charlie that the plane was loaded with heroin.  Charlie stares at the broken Virgin Mary statue seeing the little baggies of heroin.

On the way back to the hatch Hurley asks Locke what he thinks is inside the hatch.  Locke asks Hurley what he thinks might be inside.  After giving a laundry list of things that ends with Twinkies Locke agrees that he likes Twinkies too.  Hurley asks Locke what he really thinks is inside and Locke says he thinks that hope is inside.  A large bird takes off from a tree in the jungle and Hurley comments that whoever named the place the dark territory was a genius.

Exodus Part 1

Exodus Part 1 begins the first season’s finale.  The episode starts with Walt and Michael in a hotel room.  Walt turns the TV on and watches The Power Rangers.  Michael wakes up and asks him to turn the volume down.  Instead, Walt turns the volume up.  At 5:23 in the morning, who can blame Michael for yelling at Walt and turning the TV off.  Walt collects Vincent and goes out into the hallway and heads for the elevator.  Michael grabs him by the arm and takes him back to the room with Walt declaring that Michael is not his father.

Then we juxtapose that with Walt and Michael sleeping peacefully together on the island.  Walt wakes up and goes to the peeing tree.  He silently watches Danielle; the French woman walk into their camp.  Walt wakes up Michael and soon most of the camp is around keeping a watch on the stranger.  Well, a stranger to most but not to Sayid who asks her what she is doing there.  She tells him that the others are on their way.  She explains that when she crashed into the island she was seven months pregnant.  A week after she gave birth to a baby girl “The Others” came and took her.  Before they came, she saw a large plume of black smoke.  This happened sixteen years ago.

Most of the survivors pick up the pace in getting the raft ready for launch.  As they are pushing the competed raft into the water, Sawyer accidentally damages the mast.  Walt soon notices a large column of black smoke coming from somewhere in the jungle.  Everyone realizes that Rousseau’s warning might be real.  Jack questions her more about The Others but she tells him she has told him everything she knows about them.  Locke suggests the hatch will be a good place to hide all the survivors.  The only issue they still need to figure out how to open it.  He asks Rousseau about the explosives she used to blow up her own camp site.  She tells them about the black rock where she originally got the dynamite years ago.  The path to the black rock goes through something called the dark territory.

For the finale we have multiple character flashbacks.  We next see Jack at the airport bar after the issue with Jack’s father’s coffin is (I assume) sorted out.  There he meets a woman named Anna Lucia and the two share a drink.  She is also on flight 815 but she is at the back of the plane where Jack is in the front part of the plane.  She flirts with Jack for a bit before she gets a phone call and tells Jack she must take it.  The two agree to meet on the plane and have another drink together.

Jack tells the rest of the survivors about the plan and Leslie Arzt, a science teacher, tells them he is going with them to show them how to handle the volatile dynamite.  Sawyer feels that Michael doesn’t think he is helping enough as Michael is spending more of his time working with Jin than Sawyer.

We go to Sawyers flashback and see him once again in a police station in Australia.  The detective tells Sawyer that when he was in a bar fight he actually head butted the Minister of Agriculture.  Instead of arresting and prosecuting Sawyer, the detective says he looked up his record and they are going to deport Sawyer and bans him from ever returning to Australia.

We return to Sawyer chopping some bamboo in the forest.  Jack approaches him and guesses that in the regular world Sawyer was a lumberjack.  Jack then offers Sawyer a gun and tells him he is the only one on the raft that knows how to use it.  Jack wishes him good luck and begins to walk away.  Sawyer stops him and tells him that back in Australia he was in a bar drinking with Jack’s dad.  He tells Jack that Christian was proud of his son and that he was a better doctor than he had ever been.  Jack is emotional about what Sawyer tells him but doesn’t let Sawyer see it.  Sawyer wishes Jack luck and Jack walks away.  One of the best scenes of the entire series in my opinion.

Next up for a flashback is Kate who is at the airport with Mars, the Marshall.  They are in a security office where an officer asks Mars why he needs to bring five guns onto the plane.  Mars explains the story behind the toy airplane and taunts Kate about how she got her boyfriend killed.  Then tells the officer about Kate’s bank robbery plan to get the airplane back.  He keeps asking Kate what was the name of her childhood sweetheart that she got killed.  Kate attacks him and tells him that his name was Tom.  Eventually Mars restrains Kate and tells the officer that this is why he needs five guns.

Back on the island Kate tells Jack she is going to go on the trip for the dynamite.  Charlie is collecting messages from the survivors he is putting in a glass bottle to go with those on the raft.  Locke laughs at Charlie’s sentiment but doesn’t write a note.  Kate looks for Sawyer but Charlie tells her he hasn’t seen him.  Kate, Jack, Hurley, Locke, Rousseau, and Arzt all take off for the black rock.  Before leaving they all say their goodbyes to the raft crew.  The group heading to the black rock take a short break where Locke notices some scratches on Danielle’s arm.  He asks her where she got them and she tells him from a bush.  Locke comments that it must have been one mean bush.  As they go deeper and deeper into the jungle Arzt has second thoughts and decides to go back to the beach.

Speaking of back at the beach, Sawyer returns with a piece of bamboo he cut as a perfect fit for a new mast.  Back in the jungle it has begun to rain hard.  The group all hear a noise that ends up being Arzt running back to the group.  Only he’s not alone, the smoke monster is hot on his tail.  All of the group hide except for Locke and Hurley.  Locke tells Hurley they will be fine.  Which it turns out they are as the monster turns and goes away from them.  They ask Rousseau what the monster is and she says it is a security system for the island.  In a sweet moment back on the beach, Walt gives Vincent to Shannon telling her than when his mother died Vincent kept him company.  He tells her he thinks that he could do that for her to help get over the death of Boone.  She is touched and accepts the offer.

Boone, Shannon, and Sayid’s flashbacks all occur together as Sayid asks Shannon if she can watch his bag for him.  She says something like “Whatever” but really can’t be bothered and keeps doing a crossword puzzle.  Boone returns and gives her the bad news that he was unsuccessful in getting their seats on the plane upgraded.  She tells Boone she will go do it and threatens to have Boone thrown off of the plane.  He says she couldn’t do something like that.  She walks up to a security guard and tells him that a suspicious looking Arab guy left his bag unattended.  Maybe she can.

Sayid gives Michael a flare gun and a radar system and says to use them both wisely.  The group in the jungle finally make it to the black rock which isn’t a black colored rock but a large, old ship named The Black Rock.

In their flashback, Sun and Jin are at the airport.  Sun brings coffee and something to eat for Jin and her to enjoy before their flight but unfortunately she spills the coffee on Jin.  She apologizes and helps him clean up and while she does an American woman watching them makes fun of how Sun is acting.  Her husband tells her to be quiet that Sun will hear her but she brushes it off telling him she probably doesn’t speak English.  Which we know is wrong.

Sun says goodbye to Jin and gives him a notebook that she has written down some common words he might need.  She has written them out in English and Korean so it is easy for him to translate.  The two share a tearful embrace and Jin says he will be back with help.  Everyone is saying goodbye to everyone.  Walt shares a moment with Vincent.  Sun and Michael share an awkward farewell.  I think we are supposed to feel like it’s sexual tension between them but I never got that from it.

Sawyer looks for Kate to say goodbye but she is already gone.  The raft is successfully launched, and proves to be sea worthy.  Vincent tries to swim out to the raft but Walt tells him to go back.  So the first second Shannon is taking care of Vincent he slips out of her grasp and goes into the ocean.  I’m starting to think Boone was right, Shannon can’t take care of anything.  Meanwhile the black smoke from The Other’s fire continues to rise into the sky.

Exodus Part 2

The second part of the season finale picks up with Claire’s baby being cranky on the beach.  Claire complains to Charlie that she can’t ...
