I decided to break up the two-hour season finale episode into two posts. The DVD I have oddly had them as one episode, but it had a TO BE CONTINUED where I left off in the last post. So here we go, let’s see what’s up next.
We pick up with the group heading back with the dynamite; right where we left off. The monster appears close and everyone but Locke runs for cover. Jack goes after him. The monster knocks Locke down; makes some different noises we never heard before (sort of like a roller coaster moving up a steep incline) and this time Locke looks scared. Not like last time when he seemed just in awe of it. The monster grabs Locke and drags him to a hole in the jungle. Jack grabs him and he tells Kate he needs the dynamite. She goes to get it out of her bag, but Jack tells her it isn’t in her bag that it’s in his. She goes to get the dynamite, Locke tells Jack to let him go, and Kate throws a stick of dynamite into the hole. The dynamite explodes and the monster lets go of Locke.
Michael and Jin discuss the book Sun made for Jin. Well, as best they can anyway. The rudder is fixed, and Michael gives Jin the watch back again. Jin tells Michael to take it. In the caves Sun gives Claire some tea. Sun tells Claire that Aaron is a beautiful name. She asks what it means, and Claire says she doesn’t know what the name means. Sun assures Claire that Charlie will bring the baby back.
In the jungle Charlie falls for a trap set by Danielle and gets a nice cut on his head. Sayid tells Charlie he has to go back but Charlie tells him he’s not going anywhere without the baby. Sayid makes a battlefield decision and pours gunpowder on the wound and sets it on fire. Essentially cauterizing the wound. Charlie screams in pain.
Hurley wakes up in his hotel room and realizes he is late for his flight. The elevator is full (with Charlie being one of the people in it) so he goes down the stairs. On the way to the airport his car breaks down. Hurley misses his flight and is booked on flight 815. He must hustle over to the international terminal, so another race is on. As he is about to go through security we see Artz also in line. Hurley buys an old man’s scooter and gets through the airport quicker. We see a girls soccer team all wearing jerseys with Hurley’s numbers on them. Through the grace of the lady working the boarding desk Hurley makes the flight. The lady tells him that it is his lucky day.
Back on the island Hurley is repeating the numbers softly to himself. Kate hears him and asks him why he said 23. Hurley asks if it means anything to her and she says the guy in Australia turned her in for 23 thousand dollars. Jack asks why Locke didn’t think the monster was going to hurt him. Locke tells Jack it is because he is a man of faith and Jack is man of science. Locke tells Jack that none of this is a coincidence. He says they were all brought there for a reason. The island “chose” them. John tells Jack it was their destiny. Jack asks John if he discussed all this destiny with Boone. Locke says that Boone was a sacrifice that the island demanded. Jack tells John he doesn’t believe in destiny. John tells him that he does but he just doesn’t know it yet.
Back at the airport we see Locke in the wheelchair waiting to get on the plane. The attendants tell him they will have to carry him on. Locke is taken to his seat and none of the other survivors see this because he goes on first.
They finally reach the hatch with the dynamite. John gives Hurley the “extra” dynamite to move back with it. Kate runs the fuse and John and Jack rig the charges. On the raft Sawyer and Michael discuss Sawyer’s death wish of why he went on the raft. Michael tells him it’s either because Sawyer is a hero or he just wants to die. Sawyer tells him that he’s no hero. Suddenly they get a blip on the radar screen.
Charlie and Sayid make it to the signal fire. Close by is Danielle with Aaron who is crying. She comes out of the jungle with the baby, and she tells them that she just wants Alex back. She was indeed trying to make a trade with Aaron. She sobs and gives the baby back to Charlie. Charlie tells her there never were others and that she is a nut job. She tells them she heard them talking about coming to get the boy.
Jack and John finish setting up the dynamite and Kate finishes the fuse. Kate asks Jack about carrying the dynamite and not her. Jack tells her it was a judgement call. He tells her that if they survive the night they are going to have a Locke problem. He needs to know that Kate will have his back. She says she will. Hurley sees the numbers on the side of the hatch and he tells John not to light the fuse. He rants about the numbers being bad but John lights the fuse anyway. The dynamite explodes.
On the raft they all argue about whether they should shoot off the flare or not. Michael is the last to give in and begs God to help them as he shoots off the flare. The blip that was heading away from them turns around and is heads towards them. They all celebrate. A boat approaches and hits them with a spotlight. They all welcome their rescuers. At first the rescuers seem friendly enough, but they soon turn ominous when the bearded man says “We’re gonna have to take the boy.”. Sawyer is shot and falls off the raft. Jin jumps in to save him and Walt is taken onto the other boat. A lady throws a Molotov cocktail onto the raft and blows it up. In the water Michael cries out for Walt as the boat drives away.
Charlie brings Aaron back to Claire and all the survivors in the caves celebrate. Even Shannon seems a little happy and greets Sayid warmly. Unfortunately we also see a quick glimpse of a Virgin Mary statue in Charlie’s backpack.
We get a montage of all the survivors boarding flight 815. Kate is handcuffed by the Marshall, Jack and Locke meet for the first time, Sayid is looked at suspiciously by a man two seats over from him. Michael buckles Walt’s seat belt. Hurley bids a silent hello to Walt and we see him reading the comic book Walt had on the island with the polar bear featured in it. Arzt helps Claire with her carry-on. Beautiful music plays in the background that I believe is called Life and Death by Michael Giacchino.
The final image of the season we see is Locke and Jack looking down a long underground shaft that is revealed after the top of the hatch is blown off. OK, good news bad news sort of situation here: I’ll be back with season two. That’s the good news. The bad news is it won’t be until November. So rest up and we will get LOST together again then. Meanwhile I will be gearing up for The Countdown to Halloween. You could always come back here for that starting October 1st, because as usual I will be joining in on the month long festivities.
