My Darling Companion Part 1

I'm actually a little surprised this blog is still here, in recognition of this I will be doing some major house cleaning after I publish this post, I mean you should see some of these cobwebs! Looks like we're on the spider planet! I do have to give some of the credit to Cerpts, a familiar name, not so much on this blog but on the old LOST blog I used to do so many moons ago. Can't believe it's been over three years since Christian walked through those church doors. Almost nine years since the first time the opening LOST title screen swooshed across my, and millions of other (had to fight the urge to capitalize "others") television screens. But enough about ancient history I want to talk about something even older. Sort of. This November the BBC will air the 50th anniversary special of the sci-fi hit Doctor Who. It's really been on TV for 50 years? Yes, but not in a row. Thank you, Steven Wright! Over at Cerpts' blog The Land of Cerpts and Honey he posted the Doctors in order of how they tickled his fancy. I to had done a list with a co-worker and decided to post my list in the comments section of his blog post. Subsequently he suggested a list of oh, say the top twenty-five Doctor Who companions. So while I patiently await his list, I shall post mine. Starting with this little lovely lady:

25. Victoria Waterfield

History:

Victoria appeared in seven stories all with the second Doctor as well as the 30th anniversary special crossover with BBC serial Eastenders (another old favorite of mine that sadly, has not been broadcast in the U.S. since 2007). A human from Victorian England (1866) she is first seen being held hostage by the Daleks in The Evil of the Daleks as a way of forcing her father to work for them. After her father is killed saving the Doctor she becomes a companion and joins in on the journey. A clever and intelligent girl, she also showed her compassionate side as she was often concerned with the Doctors age. Although at times she was very courageous she was also one of the Doctors best "Scream Queens". She quickly grew tired of the journeys and after encountering a family in the story Fury from the Deep, she decided to stay with them. The Doctor as well as Jamie McCrimmon, also a companion, were devastated upon learning of her decision to leave. Jamie, who had quickly developed feelings for Victoria, tried to convince her to stay but she chose a ready made family for herself instead of attempting to create one while time travelling in the TARDIS.

Memorable Quotes:

"Don't you know where the Himalayas are? They're in India. Well at least I think so..."

"Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!"

24. Vislor Turlough

History:

Vislor appeared in 10 stories all with the fifth Doctor. Originally from the planet Trion, Vislor was originally a student of Brigadier Lethridge-Stewart at the Brendon Public School. He is approached by the Black Guardian who offers to return him to his home world if Vislor will agree to kill the Doctor. What the Black Guardian didn't realize was Vislor had a bit of a yellow streak and ends up refusing to kill the Doctor and instead becomes a loyal companion. It is shown that Vislor is one of only a few companions who is able to operate some of systems on the TARDIS. Eventually Vislor grows homesick and upon learning he is no longer considered a political exile on Trion, he asks the Doctor to take him home.

Memorable Quotes:

"Am I dead? I don't think I'd really care if I were. I hate Earth."

"The worst place in the universe - English public school on Earth."

23. Nyssa

History:

Originally cast as a supporting character in the story The Keeper of Traken featuring the fourth Doctor, she officially became a companion to the fifth Doctor after his regeneration in the next story Logopolis. The Master kills Nyssa's stepmother and then takes control of her fathers' body in an attempt to get her to do his bidding. After breaking the mind control the Master had held over her the Watcher shows her that her home world has been destroyed. The Doctor enlists her help in stopping the Master and later asking her to join the TARDIS team. She is on the TARDIS when Adric sacrifices himself to defeat the Cybermen in Earthshock which effects her deeply. In the story Terminus, Nyssa decides to stay behind to help turn the space station into a real hospital. The ironic twist being the station is one huge leper colony and while there Nyssa contracted the disease. She vows to help them find a cure for the disease they all suffer from. Nyssa, having been able to hide her affection for the Doctor so far drops her guard kissing him goodbye. It can be said that Nyssa had the closest relationship with the fifth Doctor, more so any other companion.

Memorable Quotes:

"So much for my friendly aliens."

"No! No! Wait! Others are worse than me!"

22. Astrid Peth

Astrid, a humanoid from the planet Sto, was a one-off companion only appearing with the tenth Doctor in the 2007 Christmas special Voyage of the Damned. Astrid (coincidentally an anagram of TARDIS) is an unhappy waitress on the star ship Titanic. She meets the Doctor and joins him and the two are teleported down to Earth where they meet Wilfred Mott. Later a plot to destroy the Titanic is uncovered. With Astrid's help, the Doctor is able to stop Max Capricorn and his angelic but villainous robots called The Host. Astrid and the Doctor share a kiss before the climactic ending where Astrid sacrifices herself by using a forklift to drive Capricorn off of a ship platform killing them both.  Using the teleporter device the Doctor is able to reconnect her atoms just long enough with the limited amount of energy left on the Titanic to see Astrid as a ghostly apparition. After kissing her spectral image one last time, the Doctor releases her "stardust" into space.

Memorable Quotes:

"You're looking good for 903."

" It's a different planet, I'm standing on a different planet. There's concrete, and shops, real alien shops! Real alien shops. Look, no stars in the sky. And it smells. It STINKS! This is amazing!"

21. Jo Grant

A junior member of the UNIT, she is assigned to being a research assistance for the third Doctor in order to defend Earth from alien threats. Appearing in 15 stories over three seasons she was the third Doctor's closest and longest companions. Courageous, although sometimes to a fault, Jo is considered to be bubbly and at times absent-minded. What she lacks in scientific know how she makes up for with an overabundance of enthusiasm. During the story The Green Death, Jo meets a Noble prize winning scientist Professor Clifford Jones. At the end of the story Jo informs the Doctor that she has fallen in love with the Professor and will be staying behind to get married. The Doctor is happy for her but also sad to see her leave him.

Memorable Quotes:

"What on earth is he doing inside a horsebox?"

"Doctor, stop being childish. "
