No "Prarie Home" Needed!

We continue with a tribute to the Top 25 Doctor Who Companions of all time.

20. Tegan Jovanka

History:

An airline stewardess from Australia, Tegan was a companion to the fourth and fifth Doctors. She joins the Doctor in his Tardis when she mistakes it for an actual police box. Shortly after, her aunt is killed by the Master. Tegan has the honor of being the companion that served the Doctor for the most consecutive years. Tegan meets the fourth Doctor in his final story Logopolis. Tegan is no nonsense and is never afraid to speak her mind. She calls herself "just a mouth on legs". Although very quick to argue with all of her fellow TARDIS passengers, she is extremely loyal. After the death of Aldric she slowly begins to unravel emotionally eventually being mentally possessed by the alien intelligence known as the Mara. After the events in Resurrection of the Daleks, Tegan decides to stay in London and quit her journeys with the Doctor.

Memorable Quotes:

"How do we find the index file? Of course if we had an index file we could look it up in the index file under Index File."

"You mean you're deliberately choosing to go on the run from your own people, in a rickety old TARDIS?"

19. Peri Brown

History:

A companion to the fifth and sixth Doctor, Perpugilliam Brown (her full name) is from California where she was a college student. Peri appeared in 11 stories with the Doctor. After an encounter with the Master, Peri decides to join the Doctor at the same time Turlough departs the Doctors company. Peri is on the receiving end of a Doctor gone mad when his regeneration to the sixth Doctor goes bad. Their relationship became strained as she continued to have disagreements with this incarnation. The sixth Doctor described her as having "a bit of an attitude". During The Trial of a Time Lord the Doctor believes Peri is dead. It is later revealed that her death was faked by the Valeyard. In fact Peri was alive and had married an alien king who had aided the Doctor in the story Mindwarp. In truth, there are several different accounts of her life after she left the Doctor's company. The story varies depending on which Time Lord tells the tale. Her character was harshly criticized as she used as a sex symbol on the show. To support this fact production was sure to have her wardrobe consist of sexy and revealing clothing.

Memorable Quotes:

"I love games, Doctor. Games where I'm not expecting to end up dead! Are you listening?"

"Silly me. What's a little radiation sickness between friends?"

"Doctor, why do you wear a stick of celery in your lapel?"

18. Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart

History:

First appearing in the episode The Web of Fear, the Brigadier is a founder and a leader of UNIT which sort of made him the third Doctor's boss. While being a natural leader and a warrior in combat it is shown that the Brigadier in most definitely a hero among heroes. The Brigadier is the subject of much discussion as to if he is an actual and official companion. The third Doctor once called the Brigadier a "pompous, self-opinionated idiot", although the Doctor later apologized and retracted his statement. He has met every Doctor from the first to the seventh and worked with the second, third, fourth, fifth, and seventh incarnations. His final appearance was with the seventh Doctor in the Battlefield story. It is later revealed that the Brigadier was knighted at some point. The Doctor met the Brigadier's daughter Kate in The Power of Three episode. In The Wedding of River Song the Doctor calls the nursing home where the Brigadier is living and is told that he had passed away in his sleep. Only River Song and Clara Oswald has met more incarnations of the Doctor than the Brigadier.

Memorable Quotes:

"Look, just tell me this: Are you or are you not the Doctor that I met during the Yeti business and then later when the Cybermen invaded?"

"Go back to Hell. You're not wanted here!"

"I'm finding it difficult to keep up with all of you these days, Doctor."

17. Ian Chesterton

History:

Ian is one of the original companions of the first Doctor appearing in 16 stories. Ian was the action-oriented cast member where the older Doctor could not handle such business. Originally a science teacher, he uses his knowledge to help keep the TARDIS crew as safe as possible.  The safety of all aboard the TARDIS is something Ian did not think the Doctor always held in high priority. During The Crusade story Ian is knighted "Sir Ian of Jaffa". After many travels, Ian, along with fellow companion Barbara, decide to use a Dalek time machine to return to Earth.

Memorable Quotes:

"Yes, I swear it! I flew here with three friends in a small box. When I left England it was 1963."

"Let me get this straight. A thing that looks like a police box, standing in a junkyard, it can move anywhere in time and space?"

"Who is he? Doctor who? Perhaps if we knew his name, we might have a clue to all this."

16. Jamie McCrimmon

History:

Originally from 18th century Scotland and a member of the Clan McLaren, Jaime has the distinction of being the companion that has appeared in the most episodes of Doctor Who. Always the gentleman he never forgets his manners around women. Jaime was very fond of all of his fellow companions but grew especially close to Victoria. Coming from a time with no technology he often adapted to situations by facing things on his own terms. Even without any knowledge of how devices worked he was able to figure out a great deal of them and even getting some of them to function. Jamie always wore a traditional Scottish kilt, even in situations where it was too cold to wear it i.e. The Abominable Snowmen story. Jamie is forced to break ties with the Doctor by the Time Lords in The War Games story just before the Time Lords force the second Doctor to regenerate to the third incarnation. After having all of his memories of the Doctor wiped except for his first adventure, he is returned to Earth during his time period. Jaime returned in The Five Doctors anniversary special as well as appearing in The Two Doctors story featuring the second and sixth Doctors respectively.

"Oh no, my mistake. The great hairy beastie is the Doctor."

"It's a flying beastie!"

"Me, foreign? You're the one that's foreign! I'm Scottish!"
