All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues

At the caves Hurley tells the rest that Ethan Rom is the one who was not on the plane.  They also discover that Claire and Charlie are missing.  Jack and Locke go on a search for them until Locke decides to gather a search party leaving Jack to go on alone.  Locke eventually catches up to him (as Jack had been searching in circles) along with Kate and Boone.  They eventually find one of Charlie’s finger bands and they decide to go in two different directions.  Kate and Jack go one direction while Locke and Boone go another.  While searching Boone talks to Locke about the “Red Shirts theory” on Star Trek.

In a flashback we see Jack in an operating room performing surgery on a woman who eventually dies.  Despite his attempts to revive her his father Christian forces him to stop his effort to revive the patient.  We later find out that the woman was Christian’s patient and he had actually began the surgery but Jack was called in to finish the surgery because Christian was drinking alcohol at lunch that day.  Christian was called in for the emergency surgery but some of the attending nurses noticed Christian was impaired and a call was made to Jack to come in and take over.

On the beach Sawyer finds out from Walt that Sayid is back and goes to the caves to confront him about the torture Sayid put him through.  At first Sawyer is being threatening towards Sayid but then doesn’t go through with his revenge.  Sayid tells him about the French woman and the whispers.  Intrigued by this new info Sawyer leaves.

Jack and Kate find more of the finger bands and as it begins to rain Jack thinks he hears Claire screaming but Kate doesn’t hear it.  After he falls down a hill Jack finds Ethan who warns Jack he will kill one of the captives if Jack doesn’t turn back.  The two fight resulting in Ethan knocking Jack out.  Jack soon regains consciousness and continues to search for Ethan.  Jack and Kate find Charlie hanging by his neck from a tree.  Kate cuts him down and Jack performs CPR on him.  Kate tries to get Jack to stop telling him that Charlie is dead, but Jack continues.  Eventually Charlie is revived.

To cover up the incident in the operating room Christian tells Jack to sign a form detailing the surgery which omits the part about the alcohol.  Christian tells Jack if the medical board hears about the alcohol they will take his license to practice medicine.  Jack initially signs the report but later at a hearing in front of the board Jack discovers the woman was pregnant.  He is then shocked to find out Christian knew but didn’t tell him.  After this Jack then tells the board about his father being under the influence of alcohol.  This impairment, Jack testifies, was what truly led to the woman’s death.  This would be what Jack's mother was referring to in White Rabbit when she guilted Jack into going to Australia to look for Christian.

Back at the caves Charlie tells Jack that “they” only wanted Claire.  Boone and Locke are still searching the jungle.  Boone decides to go back to the caves and Locke throws him a flashlight that Boone drops.  When it lands there is a metallic sound.  Boone and Locke begin to uncover a metal object buried in the ground.
