Hearts and Minds

Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later, wasn’t it?  For those familiar, we all know each episode features flashbacks to tell the stories life of the survivors before the crash.  Jack, Sayid, Charlie, Locke, Sawyer, Kate, Jin, Sun, Claire, they’ve all had flashbacks and for the most part they have been OK at least.  Well, let me introduce you to the Shannon and Boone flashback episode.  I’ll try to keep it brief.  So, let’s start with the beginning of their flashback.  Shannon calls  Boone asking him to come to Sydney which he does and when he gets there, he discovers Shannon’s boyfriend has been beating her.  Boone goes to the police, and we learn Shannon is his stepsister.  While there Sawyer is brought in wearing handcuffs and shouting about some such stuff.

On the island Boone has noticed Sayid is getting closer to Shannon and he tries to warn Sayid away, but his advice is ignored.  Locke and Boone are still trying to open the hatch they have found in the jungle.  The rest of the survivors think they are hunting for boar and Hurley yells at Boone for not bringing any back lately.  Boone tells Locke he wants to tell Shannon about the hatch.  Locke knocks him out and ties him to a tree.  When he comes to Locke puts a paste on Boone’s head wound (that Locke just gave him) and places the knife in the ground.  As he leaves, he tells Boone if he wants to free himself he just needs to want it bad enough.  Soon Boone hears Shannon screaming in the jungle and hears the sounds of the monster.  He is soon able to free himself with this motivation.

Boone runs through the jungle and finds Shannon tied to a tree.  Boone unties her and they run from the monster.  The monster eventually takes Shannon and Boone later finds her by a stream.  He watches her die while holding her in his arms.  That night Boone returns to the beach and tries to kill Locke accusing him of getting his sister killed.  Locke shows Boone that Shannon is still alive and chatting happily with Sayid.  Boone figures out that the paste contained a hallucinogenic that gave him the visions.  Locke asks Boone how seeing Shannon die made him feel and Boone tells him he felt relieved.  Satisfied with Boone’s progress, Locke takes Boone, Locke’s acolyte, back into the jungle with him.

While working with Sun in the garden Kate realizes Sun can speak English.  She asks Kate not to say anything.  Locke gives Sayid a compass telling him it might help him with figuring out the maps he got from Danielle the French woman.  Sayid shows Jack that according to the compass north is not in the direction it should be in.  The take it as the instrument is broken.

In the second half of the flashback Boone pays off Shannon’s boyfriend to leave her alone.  He agrees to do it for $50,000.  Boone agrees and tells Shannon they are leaving but she refuses.  Seems Shannon has done this before meaning this isn’t the first time Boone has paid off a boyfriend to leave Shannon alone.  It’s also not the first time that Shannon took half the money.  She tells Boone that she knows it’s his mother’s money and she owes her.  When Boone’s mother married Shannon’s father Boone’s mother took money that was supposed to be for Shannon.  Got all that?  Good!  Later that night a drunk Shannon goes to Boone’s hotel room crying telling Boone that her boyfriend took all the money.  She also tells Boone she knows Boone is in love with her.  At first, he denies this but then the two end up sleeping together.  Afterwards, Shannon asks Boone not to tell their parents and is once again cold towards him.  I told you this would be short and sweet which is perfect for one of the worst episodes of the series.  In my opinion at least.
