Triangle (2009)

I am going to be really careful giving this review as it is important that little to nothing in known about this movie ahead of time.  So with that in mind let's talk about it.  Triangle is a psychological thriller with some supernatural elements thrown in directed by Christopher Smith who has also directed Severance and Black Death.  Starring in the film is Melissa George (The Limey and Turistas) as Jess a single mother who goes on a boating trip.  Along for the ride is Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games film series) as Victor, Emma Lung (Katoomba and Stranded) as Heather, Rachael Carpani (Touched and Scorched) as Sally, Michael Dorman (The Invisible Man and Katoomba) as Greg, and Henry Nixon (The Kettering Incident and A Month of Sundays) as Downey.  Well, now that I have introduced you to the players, what else can I tell you about Triangle?

The answer is not much, and this is for your own good just in case you decide to watch this later.  So let's see, Jess is a single mom to her son Tommy who is autistic.  She oddly tells Victor that Tommy isn't with her because he is in school.  Victor tells Greg that she is acting odd (even though this is the first time he has met her) because it's Saturday.  While they are sailing on Greg's boat the wind suddenly dies down to nothing and the water is smooth as glass.  Off in the distance they can see an electrical storm heading right for them.  They radio the Coast Guard for help and while speaking to the dispatcher they hear a faint SOS call from a woman asking for help.  The only thing Greg can make out is the woman says someone is killing everyone.  Then the radio goes dead.  At that time the electrical storm passes over them creating rain, wind, and waves that capsize the boat.

Heather is immediately swept away by the ocean leaving the other five to climb onto the bottom of the boat which is now the only thing sticking out of the ocean.  A seemingly deserted luxury ocean liner passes by and they are able to climb on board.  Before they do they manage to spot a figure of a person standing on the deck of the liner.  And that's where I stop talking about the plot and story of the film.  Everybody in this does a fine job of acting with George putting in the best work.  While it's difficult to make a luxury liner have an atmosphere conducive for a good horror film, the ship fulfills it's duty fairly well.  There are some dark and scary places to be found on an ocean liner.  Triangle will seriously mess with your mind as it did my own.  I am a sucker for this type of movie but I can't really delve into it any further.  I have to say this is one of the better horror films that I have seen in awhile.  I'll sail off into the range of four dead seagulls out of five.

  1. I saw this awhile back and liked it. Something different. On a similar note, have you seen Los Cronocrímenes? I liked that, too.

  2. No I haven't seen that but I checked it out and it sounds like something right up my alley. Thanks for the tip. It may be making an appearance right here if and when I can find it.
