Firestorm

Origins - The original Firestorm was distinguished by his integrated dual identity. High school student Ronnie Raymond and Nobel Prize-winning physicist Martin Stein were caught in a nuclear accident that allowed them to fuse into the "nuclear man" Firestorm. Due to Stein's being unconscious during the accident, Raymond was prominently in command of the Firestorm form with Stein a voice of reason inside his mind. Banter between the two was a hallmark of their adventures. Firestorm faced off against a Russian nuclear man named Pozhar in the Nevada desert, where they had an atomic bomb dropped on them. When the smoke cleared, a new Firestorm was created who was made up of Raymond and the Russian, Mikhail Arkadin (the Russian superhero Pozhar), but controlled by the disembodied amnesiac mind of Prof. Stein who was terminally ill at the time. The Raymond/Arkadin Firestorm proved to be a transitional phase, as in 1989, it was revealed that Firestorm was a "Fire Elemental". Stein soon learned that he was destined to be the true fire elemental and would have been were it not for Ronnie Raymond also being there by circumstance. Raymond and Arkadin were returned to their old lives, and Stein, now Firestorm, was accidentally exiled to deep space in the process of saving the Earth. He thereafter spent many years in space as a wanderer, returning to earth on only two occasions. The latter of them Stein cured Raymond of leukemia and allowed Raymond to retain the original Firestorm persona on his own After this Ronnie continued to be Firestorm on his own on Earth, but lacking the wise advices of Stein. Firestorm would eventually become a member of the Justice League. Subsequently, Raymond was killed during the Identity Crisis storyline. During a battle with the Shadow Thief, Raymond was impaled by the Shining Knight's sword, which the Shadow Thief had stolen. The magical sword ruptured the nuclear man's containment field, resulting in Firestorm's body exploding and his residual essence funneling into the body of Jason Rusch, the new host of the Firestorm Matrix. As Firestorm, Jason meets the Stein elemental Firestorm in space. During a battle with aliens, Jason is mortally wounded and Stein offers to save him and create new bodies for Jason and himself. Rusch agrees but only if Stein agrees to join him in the Firestorm matrix. Shortly after merging, the two are confronted by the Ronnie Raymond controlled Black Lantern Firestorm who is able to absorb them into his own matrix. After Blackest Night is over Ronnie Raymond is brought back to life and has no memory of being part of the Black Lantern matrix. Nor does he recall killing Jason's girlfriend Gehenna. The two of them rejoin in forming Firestorm but due to their distrust of one another and Jason's hatred for Ronnie their union is an unstable one. They are warned by Dr. Stein that they cannot rejoin to create the matrix as it could cause the destruction of everything. During an event when Jason sees girders at a construction site turning into bubble gum the two are forced to join together to save workers at the site as well as by-standers. While inside of the matrix the two realize that there is a third part to their matrix. Professor Stein is able to deduce that the third part to their matrix is the remaining energy of the Black Lantern Firestorm. A pair of black hands reaches out from Firestorm and pulls Ronnie and Jason from the matrix leaving just what appears to be the Black Lantern Firestorm. It appears to not be wearing the Black Lantern ring anymore now calling itself Deathstorm. Jason and Ronnie reform back into Firestorm and go to the Justice League looking for help stopping Deathstorm. Realizing the he is too unstable, the JLA put him in a containment chamber while they search for a way to stabilize him. With the help of what is called "The Entity" Firestorm is able to overcome Deathstorm and the remaining Black Lanterns but in the process is thrown into the mysterious Star City forest. Shortly thereafter something called The Dark Avatar tries to attack and destroy the forest. Ronnie, now fully in control of the Firestorm matrix, is turned into a fire elemental and directed to protect the forest from the Dark Avatar. Firestorm is joined together with other elementals along with the body of Alec Holland to form another Swamp Thing to fight the Dark Avatar which appears to be a Black Lantern version of the old Swamp Thing. After the Dark Avatar is defeated, Swamp Thing brings back Firestorm to normal. Afterward, it is revealed Ronnie and Jason must find a way to contain their Firestorm matrix that is still unstable from exploding in less than ninety days. The answer to the problem Ronnie decided was for him to once again leave the matrix and allow Martin Stein to become the other half of Firestorm. At the time of this writing it is still unknown at to the whereabouts and the status of Ronnie Raymond.

Powers and Abilities -Firestorm has the ability to alter the atomic structure of inanimate matter down to the molecular level. He can affect an object's density and mass as well, reconfiguring it into any shape or design that his imagination could conceive. This power is exclusive to inert material and could not successfully affect living biological mass. Any attempt to molecularly alter the characteristics of a living entity would result in a massive biofeedback of energy. Firestorm can alter the density of his body making him insubstantial enough that he can phase through solid objects. Firestorm can absorb energy into his body and convert it into atomic power. He can absorb and project nuclear radiation and emit it as offensive blasts of energy. It seems that just through an act of will, Firestorm can fly without the aid of wings or artificial enhancements. During flight he can reach speeds in excess of 600 mph. Firestorm possesses superhuman strength which at least lets him lift over 100 tons. He possesses UV, thermal, microscopic, telescopic, and quark (he ability to see molecular structures and detect discrete atomic interactions) visions. Firestorm can survive for extended periods without the need for either food or water. The focus of Firestorm's latest costume was made more practical by Martin's redesign, including control devices able to contain and direct the hero's nuclear energies. The Firestorm costume can now manifest various minor tools and sensors out of energy.

Weaknesses and Limitations - The Firestorm Matrix draws its power from the Sun, or any nearby stars; should it be overcharged - for example, by spending too much time in the Sun's vicinity - then the Matrix burns out, severely crippling Firestorm's ability to control his own power. The greatest danger of the Firestorm Matrix is a long-term one; beyond a certain power level, the host slowly becomes distanced from their humanity. Martin became mentally and emotionally distanced, while Ronnie had become the effective equivalent of a walking energy containment unit.
