Insidious: The Red Door is the fifth and latest installment in the horror franchise that sees Patrick Wilson once again playing Josh Lambert, who along with his son Dalton, is having trouble dealing with the after effects of their memories being repressed at the end of Insidious Chapter 2. Dalton, played by Ty Simpkins (The Whale and Jurassic World) is heading off to college and it would seem that his relationship with his father hasn’t been so healthy in recent years. The Red Door is around an hour and forty-five minutes long and it doesn’t get good until around fifty-five minutes in. Then, finally, Lin Shaye shows up and it tries to get better, and it does, but it also gets confusing.
I might need to watch all the films to help chapter five make a little more sense. I could be confusing the films in this series with Wilson’s other horror franchise The Conjuring too and not realize it. Shit, not to mention The Nun series, which is a spin-off from that. Right? He's in those too! I might have to re-watch all of Wilson’s stuff to remember everything. Hey, is Patrick Wilson a modern-day horror god? He just might be! So yeah, it’s confusing for a bit. It’s always creepy though and if you’re into jump scares, you’ll get more out of this than I did. Anyway, it all comes back together at the end, but the film isn’t great.
The film that this is a sequel of I gave three stars to and this isn’t that good. In fact, the third and fourth parts of Insidious I gave two and a half stars to each and I’m not sure this is better than those. Unless I’m confusing it with the last Conjuring film I saw. Man, I don’t know now. OK, ya know what, it’s definitely not better than Bone Tomahawk ... which Wilson is ALSO in. Shit, WTF he IS in everything! He’s like the horror movie version of Samuel L. Jackson. Alright, thanks to a decent remake of Stay by Shakespeare’s Sister, I’ll go two and a half lanterns out of five which is the same score I gave all those other films I mentioned and damn, I’m really confused now!
That is a problem I have with these films! I can’t remember one from another. Had to even check Letterboxd to see if I’d watched this one. Heck, at least in the Friday the 13th films, they each stand out, for better or worse.
ReplyDeleteYeah, for some reason, at the beginning of this year and apparently lost all sense of reason and bought a box set of ALL the INSIDIOUS films (which I had never seen) and watched them all practically in a row. And I agree, I can't really remember the difference between one and another of them; however I DO see that I gave this one a 2 1/2 star rating so . . . again . . .everything you said.
ReplyDeleteAfter posting this I went back and checked and I definitely like The Conjuring films much better than the Insidious series. But again, if I saw a scene from any random film with Patrick Wilson I probably wouldn't know what film of what film series it's from. Unless, of course like I said, it's Bone Tomahawk then it's obvious.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I like the CONJURING movies although the third one was dog shit.
