Sometimes movies try to do too much and in doing so accomplish very little. The Fear Chamber tries to jam too many different movie themes together to make another film. I can’t explain all of it for fear of giving some of the details revealed at the end away and spoiling the film. Not that it deserves to be protected but sometimes as a reviewer I’m protecting future viewers, not the film I’m reviewing. Anyway, The Fear Chamber stars Richard Tyson who you might know him from being the bad guy in Kindergarten Cop or the bully from 3:00 High. Basically he usually plays a bad guy, no difference here as he plays Dr. Teddy, a serial killer. On the hunt for Teddy is Detective Nick Ferguson played by Rhett Giles who can also be seen in a lot of The Asylum studios movies. They are the people responsible for all the Sharknado films.
Anyway, Dr. Teddy nearly kills Ferguson, in fact Ferguson is so close to death that he needs a heart transplant. If that’s not enough Ferguson is also still reeling from his wife being killed right in front of him. Even though his life is saved, Nick the Dick is still on a downward spiral, and he’s usually in the neighborhood of inebriation throughout the film. So much so that he is suspended when his attempts to arrest Dr. Teddy are met with failure after failure. That doesn’t stop him though, he keeps trying to find Teddy. At one point he falls asleep in his car while waiting for his CSI friend to bring him some newly discovered info on the killers victims. When his friend shows up and opens the door to the car Nick pulls a gun on him and nearly shoots him. This causes the forensic expert to crap his pants. Poor bastard!
The other actor worthy of mentioning is Steven Williams who plays Nick’s boss Captain Bradley. Williams also played Creighton Duke in Jason Goes to Hell and Jimmy Lee in Cooley High. Let me tell you, between Williams and Tyson, I can’t tell who the bigger scene stealer/over actor is. They are both over the top with their characters. I’m not complaining but it’s odd to see everyone else in the film basically sleepwalking through their roles and then these two (who never share a scene) are just shot out of a cannon. This is another one of those low budget films and lower than “B” movie that you can’t hear any of the dialogue. The running water in the sink I can hear loud and clear but important dialogue, probably not. I’ll give this two livers we got off of the black market out of five. In the first five days we are off and running like a herd of turtles.
