Zombieland 2009

Before Deadpool, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick wrote a little something called Zombieland together.  Zombieland is a zombie movie that is actually a spoof of a zombie movie but is done so well that it is a zombie movie.  Did that make sense?  Much the way that Deadpool is such a good spoof superhero movie that it somewhere in the crazed unorganized lunacy there is a really good superhero movie that's just funny.  Same here this is just a good zombie movie that's also really good.  This was the top grossing zombie film of all time until 2013's World War Z and in my book still should be as World War Z is a bad movie based upon a really good book.

Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin all play survivors or the zombie apocalypse who (eventually) join forces in attempt to traverse the southern parts of the U.S. in hopes of finding a safe zone free of zombies.  Eisenberg is his typical angsty teen college dork just trying to fit in.  He plays it just vulnerable enough without going all Michael Cera on us.  Woody Harrelson basically takes his character Mickey from Natural Born Killers and applies him in a more positive and affirmative way and then drops him in the middle of the zombie apocalypse.  Stone and Breslin feature here in the first acting rolls I recall ever seeing the two in and they certainly leave a lasting impression.  The cast won the Scream Award for Best Ensemble cast as well as the film winning for Best Film and there is also a win for Best Cameo which I will leave you to discover for yourself if you haven't seen the movie.

As far as zombie spoofs go you have to compare this to Shaun of the Dead and while I also like (dare I say love?) that movie, Zombieland is right on par with that.  This is definitely more on the comedy side than it is on the horror where Shaun was more balanced but this still has it's moments that can make you jump.  Somewhere along the way the creators of this movie manage to make you care about all the characters and underneath all the Zombie Kills Of The Week there is a story that matters.  The Horror Honey and I are on a roll as we have yet another film that gets 4 Delicious Twinkies out of 5.  I know there's going to be a let down somewhere but we are enjoying the ride while we are on it!
