5/10 - Map of the Seven Knights 5/12 - Into the Schwarzwald

5/10 - Map of the Seven Knights

Today we leave season four behind and jump right into the middle of season five.  A few things have changed since we last checked in.  Adalind has had another baby, this time the father is Nick.  Yes, you read that right.  Nick and Adalind are now living together but not in the same house he was in with Juliette.  The three of them have moved into an old warehouse loft that Adalind calls the "fome"; part fortress and part home.  Adalind and Nick have a baby boy that Adalind named Kelly in memory of Nick's mom.  Meanwhile, Munroe's uncle Felix calls him all the way from Germany concerning some old books that have found their way to him.  He tells Munroe that the books aren't the only thing he has found as the trunk that they were in belonged to a Grimm.  There were also some Grimm weapons.  Felix tells Munroe he has emailed him some pictures of the trunks contents and that this is a very pressing matter that cannot wait.  Munroe and Rosalee show Nick the pictures on their laptop and Nick says he is very interested in these books.  The Verrat have been replaced by Black Claw as the Wesen group that is after Nick and his extended family now and they are after the books as well.

Another group has risen to help Nick fight against Black Claw.  A group of humans and Wesen joined together.  Meisner is a member and leader of the Oregon chapter of Hadrian's Wall.  Hadrian's Wall is a part of the federal government.  Chavez, the FBI agent who said "Get her.", at the end of Cry Havoc is also a member.  Trubel was recruited right before the end of season four.  Trubel, however, was not the "her" Chavez was talking about but rather Juliette who is also a member of Hadrian's Wall.  After Juliette was killed by Trubel, Chavez's people took Juliette and revived her.  They then mentally disassembles Juliette and put her back together and named her Eve.  Eve remembers everything Juliette remembers but does not consider herself to be Juliette.  She was reprogrammed as a way for her to get a better control of her Hexenbiest powers.  Trubel goes to see Eve and tells her she didn't mean to kill her.  Eve coldly tells her that she killed Juliette that night and that if she had not killed Juliette then Juliette would have killed Trubel.  While all of this is going on, Renard has been keeping himself busy by helping Andrew Dixon run for mayor of Portland.  He is also working closely with Dixon's campaign manager Rachel Wood.

Munroe is surprised to see Felix show up at his front door all the way from Germany.  Munroe calls Nick and tells him his uncle is in town and wants to talk to him.  Nick calls Trubel and tells her about the books and that he wants her to come with him to look at them as he does not truly trust Felix.  When they get to Munroe's, Felix is not happy to see Trubel and woges when he see she is also a Grimm.  Munroe tells everyone to calm down and they both apologize to each other.  Felix tells Nick there are 20 books all together.  Felix says that Nick can have them for $100,000.  Nick isn't sure how he could get that much cash.  Trubel tells him to show the book to Meisner and he might get some government aid with the money.  Nick, Trubel, and Munroe go to the Hadrian's Wall compound with the book.  Eve comments that it would be nice to have the 20 new books as they could help replace everything that was lost when Nick's trailer was torched.  (this was done by Juliette at the end of last season as well - ed.)

Nick, Wu, and Hank get a call for a body that has been found and when they get to the body Nick is shocked to find it is Felix.  Nick calls Munroe and tells him he needs to get there as Nick thinks he will need Munroe's help.  Nick thinks it is Wesen on Wesen and tells Munroe it is a brutal scene.  Luckily it doesn't look like Felix had the books at his hotel room so wherever they are the other 19 must still be safe.  The murderers also killed the antique dealer that Felix got the books from.  They also left their calling card at the shop connecting them to a Black Claw cell from the Czech Republic.  They find out the rest of the books are arriving on a ship and being held by a cargo company but they need the customer claim number to get them.  Since Felix's room and book store was vandalized they assume Felix's killers have the claim forms.  Nick and Munroe arrive at the shipping company at the same time Felix's killers get there.  Munroe woges, attacks, and bites their throats out.  Munroe tells Nick they had it coming.  Nick and Munroe get the trunk and take it to The Spice Shop.

At The Spice Shop, they pick the lock on the trunk and remove all the contents.  At the bottom Munroe finds a fake panel.  Underneath is a large weapons cache.  Inside one of the books is Nick's name as well as all the living Grimms in the world.  If those books had gotten into the hands of Black Claw they would have been able to get at every Grimm alive.  In another secret compartment Munroe finds three more of the seven keys making it a total of five that Nick now possesses.  They dip all five keys in some ink and press them onto a piece of paper making a map.  Munroe looks at the map they have printed and compares it to a real map and looks at the similarities.  Munroe has an exact match to where the keys are telling them to go and that it is in the Schwarzwald which is The Black Forest.  Nick tells Munroe that that is where they are going.  The quote for this episode is "History is the nightmare from which I am trying to awaken."  which is taken from Ulysses by James Joyce.  I feel this quote refers to Eve and how everyone is now reacting to her being back.  All of them knowing that in order to move forward together no matter how tentatively they do it they need to let go of the past (history) in order to move on.

 5/12 - Into the Schwarzwald

We have reached a milestone for Grimm as Into the Schwarzwald is the shows 100th episode.  So with that in mind we pick up with Nick and Munroe in the Black Forest where they are trying to find the spot the secret keys revealed a couple episodes ago.  The X on the map seems to be at the top of a hill and when they reach the hill they find a foundation of some sort.  Possible a church.  They begin to dig and suddenly the ground under them falls away.  They look around and see skulls and bones all around them and realize they are in a catacombs.  The decide they are in the spot they need to be and begin to dig.  They come up empty and get frustrated when Nick reasons that maybe they can't find what they are looking for is because they have light.  "What happens if we turn off the lanterns?", Nick wonders.  So they turn off the lanterns and see a bunch of skulls light up on one wall and on the opposite wall is a bunch of skulls showing a large G .  After they turn their lanterns back on they begin removing the skulls on the wall revealing the mark of The Knights Templar.  After investigating the area they find a small alcove with a box hidden inside.  The box has seven key holes; one for each of the secret Grimm keys.  They have five and will need to pick the other two so they pack the box carefully away in Nick's backpack and look for a way out.  They begin to remove rubble from an old stairway they find.

Now, back in Portland we got stuff happening there too.  Remember I told you Renard was working on a mayoral candidates campaign?  Well, that guy just got assassinated while giving a rally speech.  Renard, Hank, and Wu look for the killer but they also have help they don't know they have; Eve is there as well.  Wu and Hank search but come up empty.  Renard goes back to the precinct.  Eve sees the shooter, a man named Marwan, and using her telekinetic powers is able to send a cyclist into him knocking him out.  She woges and breathes a green gas into Marwan's mouth which places him in a coma-like state.  Wu and Hank tell Renard the killers name and that he is a member of Black Claw.  Eve brings Marwan's phone back to the Hadrian's Wall compound and they make a copy of the phones SIM card so they can see all the contacts in his phone which will shine a spotlight on who else is Black Claw.  Meisner tells Eve to take the phone back to Marwan who is now in the hospital.  Eve leaves the hospital after planting the phone and Marwan wakes up.  He retrieves his phone and calls a man named Lucien who is the leader of the Portland cell of Black Claw.  Lucien tells Marwan he will meet him outside of the hospital.  Right after, Lucien calls Renard and gives him an anonymous tip that Marwan will be outside of the hospital in twenty minutes.  Renard, Hank, and Wu all head to the hospital.

Adalind and Rosalee are hanging out at The Spice Shop commenting that they should have heard from Nick and Munroe by now.  A customer comes in and tells them Dixon, the mayoral candidate, has been killed.  Adalind goes to look at the news on TV.  A man named Tony from Rosalee's past comes in and tells her she owes him.  He took a drug rap for her years ago and went to jail for her.  He demands five thousand dollars from her.  She refuses and he begins to wreck the shop and knocks Rosalee to the ground.  Adalind comes back and sees this.  Tony turns his attention to Adalind and goes to attack her but using her telekinetic ability she stops his hand in mid air.  She then bends back each of his fingers slowly breaking them.  He runs and Rosalee locks the door.  Adalind who had her Hexenbiest powers suppressed is shocked they are back.  Rosalee tells her she needs to tell Nick when he gets back.  She also wants to see if there is a way to increase the suppressant as Adalind doesn't want her powers back due to her and Nick recently getting closer.

Nick and Munroe make their way out of the catacombs and head down the hill towards their car.  The realize they are being hunted by a shady priest who is also a Blutbad and a bunch of other Wesen.  One of the men hunting them woges and bites Munroe on the arm before running off again.  Nick and Munroe continue to their car but two more men are there waiting for them.  Munroe notices they are two more Blutbad.  He woges and runs to them telling them in German the Grimm is in the forest attacking.  The two men run into the forest.  Nick and Munroe flatten one tire on the rest of the cars around theirs.  They leave as the group runs towards them but are unable to follow.  Nick and Munroe head to the airport and call Rosalee at The Spice Shop to let them know they are OK.  After talking to Nick on the phone Adalind goes back to their house and eats dinner alone.  She notices her glass of water suddenly begins to boil.  Nick and Munroe make it back to to the shop and call Hank and Wu to get them there as well.  While they wait Rosalee looks after Munroe's bitten arm.  She tells him it looks really bad and may have blood poisoning.  After all of them are assembled they each take a key and place it in the box.  Nick picks the other two locks but the box still won't open.  Munroe suggest it needs Nick's blood to open the box so Nick cuts his finger and rubs the blood around the lid of the box.

Marwan exits the hospital and sees a car coming to get him but Hank gets out and Marwan runs.  Wu pulls up blocking his way.  Marwan turns and runs down a flight of stairs and sees Renard waiting at the bottom for him.  He turns to go back up but Hank and Wu are behind him.  Renard and Marwan both woge and fight.  The fight ends with Renard killing Marwan.  Renard, back at the police station, watches footage of the assassination.  He notices right before the shot that the campaign manager Rachel Woods is on her phone and looks up in the direction the shot come from before the shot is fired.  Meisner meets Renard in the parking garage and tells him they needed Marwan alive.  Meisner doesn't even know how Renard knew Marwan was in the hospital and Renard tells him about the tip he got.  Meisner says this is bad for all of us as he now feels Renard was set up to kill Marwan by Lucien.  Later, at Renard's house Rachel is waiting for him.  He confronts her about knowing about Dixon's assassination and wants to know who she is working for.  She tells him they are people who will change his life.  Later still, Lucien now shows up at Renard's and tells him Marwan was supposed to kill Dixon and and he was supposed to kill Marwan.  Renard realized it was Lucien who called in the tip and then figures out they are Black Claw.  Rachel tells him that they are going to make him the most powerful man in Portland and shows him a campaign poster with his face on it.

Back at The Spice Shop everyone is disappointed and want to know why they would bury a stick.  Rosalee tells Munroe they need to get Munroe to the doctor and worry about the stick later.  Wu notices writing on the cloth the stick was wrapped in.  Munroe stands up and begins to fall over with Nick and Hank catching him and lowering him to the stairs.  Rosalee says he definitely has blood poisoning and Hank uses his belt as a tourniquet on Munroe's arm.  Wu calls 911 as Munroe goes into shock.  Rosalee says they can't wait for an ambulance.  Nick and Hank help get Munroe to his feet but his arm begins to heal and he regains consciousness.  Munroe, now fine, asks them what they did.  Nick holds up the stick and says: "This.".  The quote for this episode is "What's past is prologue.", which is a line from The Tempest by William Shakespeare.  The interpretation for this is that the past always sets the stage for the present meaning everything happened before this for a reason and that everything is fated to happen.  Everything that happened before in Grimm was all meant to bring up to this moment.
