The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie (1989)

We're going to head back to my home state of New Jersey for our next film The Toxic Avenger 3: The Last Temptation of Toxie.  Gotta love that title!  Once again we have Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz doing the directing as well as the writing.  Starring as Toxie is Ron Fazio, along with Phoebe Legere who's back as Claire, Toxie's blind girlfriend.  Jessica Dublin is also back playing Toxie's loving mother.  Once again Toxie is having a hard time keeping a job when he learns of a new medical procedure that could give Claire her sight back.  Only problem is that the procedure costs over three hundred thousand dollars.  Claire is excited to hear about the procedure but is disappointed when reality sets in knowing they can't afford it.  To make matters worse Apocalypse (the evil chemical company from the last film) is back.  The leader of Apocalypse knows they cannot beat Toxie so he does the next best thing: he decides he will get Toxie to join them.

The Chairman hears about the procedure to give Claire her sight back so he offers Toxie a job as a spokesman for Apocalypse and he will be paid enough so they can afford the treatment.  Claire gets her sight back but with Toxie working for Apocalypse there is nothing to protect Tromaville and soon the town is taken over by Apocalypse.  Claire falls even more in love with Toxie after getting her sight back (you know the deal; a lid for every pot) and there is one hell of a sex scene.  Toxie turns a blind eye (ironic, I know) to everything Apocalypse is doing until he sees a group of kids rip down a poster of himself and deface it.  He saves a bunch of Tromaville citizens from some Apocalypse goons who took them hostage in a video store.  The Chairman doesn't like this and the two must face off.  Only problem is, it is revealed The Chairman is in fact Satan.  During the fight Toxie is turned back into Melvin the 98 pound weakling.  After Claire attempts to help Melvin, The Chairman, still looking like The Devil takes Claire's sight again.  Things have never looked so hopeless and bleak as they did right then.

After watching the first two films I knew what to expect even if skipping this one was suggested by some diehard Toxic Avenger fans.  I gotta admit this one felt weird, like it didn't fit in with the previous two films.  I mean how was he able to be tricked into working for Apocalypse after what happened in the last film.  Also some  scenes from the second film are reused here, especially the scene where all the Apocalypse associates are giving their status reports.  The splatter and gore are both something we have come to expect from Troma films and we get a healthy dose of it here.  It also has it's funny parts but again this one felt off to me.  I'm stuck between two and two and a half... OK, I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and go two and a half Chevy Novas out of five.  I was disappointed.
